Making genomics usable

The question

How can a whole-genome service turn an immense volume of scientific data into something personally relevant and worth returning to?

The work

Genome Explorer already offered powerful access to genomic information, especially for technical audiences. We updated it and developed Next Gen Disease Screen to narrow the view to rare disease. Even with a more focused scope, the information remained demanding for a consumer.

Health Scan took a further step. It was designed around health questions and changing scientific knowledge: a way to bring relevant developments back to a person over time and help them understand where to investigate further. For the business, ongoing value could support monthly and annual subscriptions alongside one-time sequencing kit sales.

Our design team had two people covering research, service and information design, UX, UI, data visualization, and brand. I designed Health Scan from the ground up, from its visualizations and interactive tables to its mobile layout and application of the brand system. We iterated the interface and how its value was explained as the product developed.

The judgment

The key move was to organize around a person's health questions and the meaning of new information, rather than ask a consumer to navigate the full breadth of genomic data. That did not reduce the underlying science; it changed the path into it.

The result

Health Scan launched and saw strong adoption in my account of the period. Subscription revenue grew as the business developed recurring services, and the product gave marketing and investor conversations a more concrete consumer proposition. I do not have a verified figure or attribution analysis for the revenue change.

The broader product work also included Sequencing AI, an initial chat interface. I explored native mobile app concepts and wireframes; that app did not launch during my involvement.

Contribution and result

FieldAccount
My contributionLed and executed Health Scan design across data visualization, interaction, mobile UI, and brand within a two-person design team.
Observable consequenceHealth Scan launched; consumer adoption and subscription business grew during the period.
BasisFirsthand product account and approved consumer product visuals.
BoundaryNo publishable revenue figure or isolated causal effect is established here. The native app concepts were unlaunched.

What I carry forward

A useful consumer product has to create a path from technical possibility to a question someone recognizes as their own.

Project descriptions focus on my role and the contribution I can describe publicly. Confidential materials are omitted. Illustrations identified as reconstructions explain an idea; they are not original project deliverables.
